Shimla: Congress leader Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu (58) today took oath as the 15th chief minister of Himachal Pradesh along with his deputy Mukesh Agnihotri. The oath-taking ceremony was held at the historic Ridge Maidan in Shimla. A lawyer by qualification, he had headed the Congress Party’s election campaign in the state and is a four-time MLA. A grassroots politician, he has been active in the Congress Party since his college days as a member of the party’s students’ wing, the National Students’ Union of India.
Along with the Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi too were among those who attended the swearing-in ceremony.
Son of a Himachal Road Transport Corporation driver, Sukhu was born on March 27, 1964, in Sera village of Nadaun tehsil in Hamirpur district and is the first CM who is from lower Himachal. All past chief ministers were from upper Himachal.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today congratulated him on taking oath as Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh.
In a tweet, the Prime Minister said: “Congratulations to Shri Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu Ji on taking oath as Himachal Pradesh CM. I assure all possible cooperation from the Centre to further the development of Himachal Pradesh.”
