Khyber Pakhtunkhwa/Geneva/Guwahati: Serious concerns are raised globally over the continued killing of journalists in Pakistan as another scribe, Janan Hussain, lost his life in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bordering Afghanistan.
40-year-old Hussain was among the 42 Shiite Muslims who were ambushed and killed by gunmen in the Kurram locality on November 20, 2024. He worked for a local media outlet Channel 365 and was associated with Parachinar Press Club.
He is the 11th media worker to be killed in Pakistan this year till date.
The Geneva-based Press Emblem Campaign (PEC), the global media safety and rights body, today condemned the death of the scribe.
“Janan Hussain becomes the 129th journo-victim globally since January 1, 2024, and it’s a matter of serious concern that in most of the cases, the impunity to perpetrators is almost guaranteed,” Blaise Lempen, president of PEC, stated. He demanded that the responsible Pakistani authorities investigate the incident that led to the untimely demise of the journalist.
Hussain left behind young kids, and Lempen demanded that the culprits be punished as early as possible. He said the unabated killing of media employees in Pakistan even when it’s not a war was shocking.
PEC’s South Asia representative Nava Thakuria stated in Guwahati that before Hussain, the ten media workers who were killed in Pakistan were: Jam Saghir Ahmed Lar of Daily Khabrain, Punjab, who was killed on March 14; Tahira Nosheen Rana of a local Urdu newspaper of Punjab was killed on April 22; Muhammad Siddiq Mengel of Khuzdar Press Club, Balochistan, was killed on May 3; Mehar Ashfaq Siyal of Daily Khabrain, Punjab, was killed on May 15; Kamran Dawar (YouTube/Facebook) was killed in North Waziristan, on May 21; Nasrullah Gadani of Awami Aghaz, Sindh, was killed on May 24; Khalil Jibran of Khyber News, Pakhtunkhwa, was killed on June 19; Hasan Zaib of Aaj News, was killed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on July 14; Muhammad Bachal Ghunio of Awaz TV, Sindh, was killed on August 26; and Nisar Lehri of Masting Press Club, Balochistan, was killed on September 4, 2024.
