Patna: Bihar Legislative Council Chairperson Awadhesh Narayan Singh on Saturday tested positive for coronavirus, prompting chief minister Nitish Kumar and other senior leaders to give their swab samples for COVID-19 testing.
Singh’s wife, two sons and daughter-in-law, as well as his personal assistant too were tested positive for the virus.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was among the top leaders who had attended the oath taking ceremony of the new members of the Bihar Legislative Council on July 1. However, the Chief Minister, who gave his sample for testing, was tested negative for coronavirus. 16 Chief Minister’s Office staffers too were tested negative for COVID-19.

The Council’s Chairperson Singh had sent his swab sample for testing on Friday and his report was received on Saturday.
In video recording of the event, Nitish Kumar was seen taking a seat on a podium along with three other leaders including Awadhesh Narayan Singh flanking him. Other leaders who attended the event include Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, Bihar assembly Speaker Vijay Kumar Choudhary; Ministers Shravan Kumar, Mangal Pandey and Vinod Narayan Jha, BJP whip in Bihar Legislative Council Reena Yadav and MLAs Abdul Bari Siddiqui and Bhola Yadav, among others.
The Assembly Speaker and his secretariat staff have also given their swab samples for testing.
