Ganga Andolan
Haridwar: Swami Shivanand Saraswati, a former physics professor turned seer, who was on an indefinite fast since August 3, demanding incessant and pure flow of river Ganga, broke his indefinite fast on Wednesday night around 10.30 pm following an assurance by the government to this effect.
The Swami is the founder of Matri Sadan situated on the bank of Ganga here and which has been if the forefront of a Ganga movement for the last few years. Already a prominent scientist turned seer, Professor GD Agarwal aka Swami Sanand, had laid down his life after sitting on an indefinite fast here for the same cause, in 2018.

Dr. Vijay Verma, an associate of Swami Shivanand informed that the Director-General of National Mission for Clean Ganga, Rajiv Ranjan Mishra, had written a letter to the seer wherein he assured the latter of considering his demands and requested him to break his fast. This, Dr. Verma said, could happen because of the efforts of Union Jal Shakti minister Gajendra Singh.

It may be recalled that on August 30, the central government had sent its two representatives to Matri Sadan to meet Swami Shivanand.
Earlier yesterday, a group of activists had petitioned Union Minister Shekhawat as well as Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, urging them to accede and implement the demands of Swami Shivanand for “Aviral Nirmal” Ganga.
The petition was signed by 131 activists “representing majority of NGOs striving to rejuvenation Nature & Environment”, who “earnestly” appealed to the ministers to concede to and implement the swamy’s “just demands” to save him and sacred Ganga.
The petitioners including prominent environmentalist and winner of Stockholm Water Prize, Dr. Rajendra Singh, PV Rajagopal of Ekta Parishad, Medha Patkar, Aruna Roy, Vandana Shiva, V. Prakash Rao (Policy advisor to the Chief Minister of Telangana), appealed to the ministers to “concede to and implement demands of Swami Shri Shivananda Saraswati who is on Amaran-Anshan for Aviralta-Nirmalta (Continuous & Pure Flow) of River Ganga”.
“The Global Environmental Crisis and urgent need to save all natural resources and to drastically reduce carbon footprint, have made it mandatory to take urgent steps to save Ma Ganga, all rivers and natural resources of India. Swamiji’s fast and chain fasting by water warriors and several petitions to rejuvenate ailing rivers are not only for Ma Ganga but one of the struggles to save nature and environment of India. Then only, Lifeforms including human species will survive in midst of environmental catastrophe and 6th Mass Extinction on Earth. Before him Prof. GD Agarwal sacrificed his life after a 111-day amaran anshan (indefinite fast) for the same set of demands. Before Prof .G D Agarwal, Swami Nigamanandji and others have given up their lives through amaran anshan. Their demands were accepted but not yet implemented. Hence Swami Shivanandji’s fast unto death. Swami Shri Shivanandji is putting his life in the highest traditions of ‘giving voice to the voiceless’ and nothing in his demands is for himself – all is for the saving of River Ganga and all polluted, encroached and exploited rivers. His anshan has a context that includes the entire global mismanagement of natural resources by humanity,” the petitioners had written.
