Geneva: A panel is set to investigate the actions taken by Türkiye aimed at regulating imports of Chinese electric vehicles. During a session of the Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) on February 24, 2025, World Trade Organization (WTO) members consented to China’s request to form a dispute panel that will assess Türkiye’s measures related to electric vehicles and other vehicle categories from China.
China put forth its second request to form a dispute panel to address various measures implemented by Türkiye regarding electric vehicles (EVs) and other vehicle types originating from China. This followed China’s initial request, which was blocked by Türkiye during the Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) meeting on January 27, 2025.
Beijing emphasized that the challenges faced by one member’s industry should be resolved in accordance with WTO obligations and should not serve as a justification for neglecting the fundamental principle of non-discrimination, which underpins the WTO and the rules-based international trading framework.
In response, Türkiye expressed significant concern over China’s decision to make this request before exhausting all potential avenues for bilateral discussions.
Türkiye highlighted that the request pertains to a critical sector that has been grappling with substantial challenges for years, stemming from uncompetitive practices, excessive subsidization, and overcapacity.
The Dispute Settlement Board agreed to establish the panel, with several countries, including the European Union, Japan, and the United States, reserving their rights to participate as third parties in the proceedings.
Earlier, the WTO Secretariat issued a notification regarding an upcoming meeting scheduled for February 24, 2025, concerning the Dispute Settlement Body. This body, which includes all WTO members, is responsible for managing legal disputes that arise between them.
