The famous story unfolds during Emperor Akbar’s reign and revolves around a poor man named Gangadhar, who, driven by his desperate need for money, agrees to stand in an icy lake on a freezing winter night. His perseverance, despite the harsh conditions, becomes a subject of debate in Akbar’s court.
When Gangadhar seeks his promised reward, Akbar accuses him of cheating, claiming that the faint light of a distant lamp warmed him through the night.
Deprived of his rightful prize, Gangadhar’s plight moves Birbal to act.
Birbal smartly demonstrates the absurdity of Akbar’s reasoning by attempting to cook khichdi with a pot hanging far and far above a flame. When questioned, Birbal points out that if a distant lamp could provide warmth, his method of cooking should work too.
This witty yet profound example forces Akbar to realize his mistake, leading to Gangadhar receiving his reward.
