New Delhi: Union Health and Family Affairs Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan, will take charge as the chairman of World Health Organization’s Executive Board, which is comprised of 34 members, on Friday.
The WHO Executive Board members are qualified in the field of health, each one designated to their respective member states elected to do so by the World Health Assembly for a term of three years. Dr. Harsh Vardhan is an Otolaryngologist by qualification. He will replace Dr. Hiroki Nakatani of Japan, whose term is coming to an end.
The primary functions of the Board are to give effect to the decisions and policies of the Health Assembly, to advise it, and to facilitate its work. The proposal to appoint India’s nominee as the chairman of the executive board was signed unanimously by the 194- nation World Health Assembly on Tuesday, informed sources said.[the_ad_placement id=”content-placement-after-3rd-paragraph”]
The post of the chairman is held by rotation for one year among regional groups. The appointment is not a full-time assignment the Chairman will only be required to preside over as the chair over the Executive Board’s meetings twice a year., the officials said.
