New Delhi: Nepal today was rocked by a series of earthquakes the most powerful measuring 6.2 on the Richter Scale with the epicentre about two kilometres from Hemantabada at a depth of 5 kilometres (Latitude 29.39 North; Longitude 81.23 East) at 14:51:04 IST today.
The extent of damage is yet to be ascertained.
This powerful earthquake, the tremor was felt even in Lucknow, Delhi, and parts of Uttarakhand, followed an earthquake of 4.6 magnitude with the epicentre around the same place (Latitude 29.37 North, Longitude 81.22 at 14:25:52 IST. Yesterday, there was an earthquake of 5.2 magnitude with the epicentre at a depth of 10 km near North Garo Hills in Meghalaya (Latitude 25.90 North, Longitude 90.57 East) at 18:15:18 IST.
Later today, an aftershock of 3.8 magnitude happened in Nepal (Latitude 29.39 North, Longitude 81.07 East) at a depth of 15 km. at 15:06:07 IST, the National Centre for Seismology said here.
The back-to-back earthquakes in Nepal caused panic even in Delhi where the strongest of them lasted approximately 40 seconds which triggered panic amongst the residents. Several videos on social media have been circulating where people are seen running out of their homes.
