Prime Minister Narendra Modi with British PM Boris Johnson in Glasgow today
Glasgow: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today called on world leaders to make adaptation a key part of development policies and projects. Speaking at the COP-26 summit, Modi claimed that adaptation had not gained as much importance as mitigation in the global climate debate and said this was an injustice to developing countries, which he said were more affected by climate change.
Climate is a major challenge for farmers in most developing countries, including India – the cropping pattern is changing, crops are being destroyed by untimely rains and floods, or frequent storms. From drinking water sources to affordable housing, everyone needs to make resilient against climate change, he said.
Offering three views in this context, Modi said while adaptation should be a key part of the development policies, traditional practices of indigenous communities should get due importance in adaption policies and these traditional communities have the knowledge of living in harmony with nature.
“This flow of knowledge should also be added to the school syllabus so that it goes to the new generation. Conservation of lifestyles in line with local conditions can also be an important pillar of adaptation,” he said.
Thirdly, he said there should be global support for countries with regard to the methods of adaptation, even if they are local.
With the idea of global support for local adaptation, India had taken the initiative of Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure CDRI. Modi called on all countries to join this initiative.
