New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed two separate contracts, worth approximately Rs 2,867 crore, with Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) and the Naval Group, France, today.
The contract for constructing the Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) Plug and their integration onboard Indian Submarines was signed between the Ministry of Defence and the Mumbai-based Mazagon Dock Limited. The contract is worth approximately Rs. 1,990 crore, the Ministry of Defence said.
Another contract worth Rs 877 crore for the integration of the Electronic Heavy Weight Torpedo (EHWT) onboard the Kalvari-Class submarines, being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has been signed with Naval Group, France.
Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh was present when both contracts were signed in New Delhi on December 30, 2024.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation is indigenously developing the Air-Independent Propulsion technology, the Ministry of Defence stated.
The Ministry of Defence claimed that the Air-Independent Propulsion Plug construction and its integration project will enhance the endurance of conventional submarines and significantly contribute to the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant India)’ initiative. The Ministry added that this project would generate employment of nearly three lakh man-days.
The Electronic Heavy Weight Torpedo integration project will be a collaborative effort of the Indian Navy, the Defence Research and Development Organisation, and the Naval Group, France.
“It would greatly augment the firepower capabilities of the Kalvari Class submarines of the Indian Navy,” the Ministry of Defence added.
