
New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has finalized contracts amounting to approximately Rs 2,500 crore for the acquisition of the Nag Missile System (NAMIS) Tracked version, an anti-tank weapon platform, along with around 5,000 light vehicles intended for the armed forces. The agreement for the NAMIS Tracked version was established with Armoured Vehicle Nigam Limited, while contracts for the light vehicles were signed with Force Motors Ltd and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. These agreements, categorized under Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured), were executed today in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
The total expenditure for the contract concerning the acquisition of the NAMIS (Tr) weapon system, which has been developed by the Defence Research & Development Laboratory of DRDO, amounts to Rs 1,801.34 crore. According to the Ministry of Defence (MoD), this development represents a “significant milestone” in the enhancement of the anti-tank capabilities of the Mechanised Infantry, thereby improving the operational readiness of the Indian Army across a diverse range of operations.
The Nag Missile System (NAMIS) Tracked version is recognized as one of the most advanced anti-tank weapon systems designed to counter enemy armor, featuring a fire-and-forget anti-tank missile along with a sophisticated sighting system that boosts its firepower and lethality. The MoD has indicated that this weapon system is poised to revolutionize mechanized operations and provide a strategic advantage over adversaries.
The modern light vehicles are designed as per contemporary vehicle technology with enhanced engine power to cater to a payload of 800 kgs. It will provide mobility to the Armed Forces in all types of terrain and operational conditions.
Both procurements will enhance indigenisation and national defence equipment manufacturing capabilities. The projects have immense potential of direct and indirect employment generation by encouraging the MSME sector through components’ manufacturing, the MOD stated.
Modern light vehicles are engineered using advanced vehicle technology, featuring improved engine power to support a payload capacity of 800 kilograms. These vehicles will ensure mobility for the Armed Forces across various terrains and operational scenarios.
The acquisitions will bolster indigenization efforts and strengthen the manufacturing capabilities of national defense equipment. According to the Ministry of Defence, these projects hold significant potential for creating both direct and indirect employment opportunities by promoting component manufacturing within the MSME sector.
