Goan fish curry and rice are the everyday staple food of Goa and also an integral part of their cuisine. It is one of the least complicated curries that are easy to make yet creamy with a depth of authentic flavours. Its tangy and spicy taste makes it one of the most loved dishes in Goa.
Ingredients
Serving for 4 to 5 persons
Kingfish ( or any firm white fish): 1 kg
Onion: 1 large
Tamarind paste: 1 tsp
Dried red chilli: 4 to 5
Coriander seed: 2 tsp
Cumin seeds: 1 tsp
Garlic clove: 6 to 7
Grated coconut: 2 tsp
Green chilli: 2
Turmeric powder: ½ tsp
Oil: 2 tsp
Salt as required
Step 1
Marinate the fish pieces with salt and turmeric powder and keep them aside for a while.
Step 2
Grind together onion, green chilli, tamarind paste, cumin seed, coriander seed, garlic, grated coconut and turmeric powder into a smooth paste.
Step 3
Heat oil in a thick bottom pan. Add the masala paste, stirring continuously.
Step 4
Saute the masala until the oil leaves the side of the pan and releases its aroma.
Step 5
To this add about two cups of water and let it come to a boil.
Step 6
Gradually add the marinated fish one by one and let it soak in the masala.
Step 7
Cook the fish on medium heat for about seven to eight minutes or until done. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with plain steamed rice.
