Imphal: An Earthquake of 5.3 magnitude occurred in the Tamenglong district, about 46 kms south west of Imphal at 23:08:00 IST on October 10, 2020. Its epicentre was at the depth of 28 km on Latitude 24.69 North and Longitude: 93.47 East, the National Center for Seismology (NCS), informed. The extent of damage was not immediately known.
The epicentre of the earthquake lied in the vicinity of Churachandpur Mao Fault (CMF), which is N-S trending strike-slip fault and runs from approximately 22.1°N, 93.1°E to 26.0°N, 93.6°E. The preliminary fault-plane solution obtained from waveform inversion suggests that the dominant strike-slip mechanism for the event and confirm the CMF is the causative source of the event.
Earlier on October 9 too, tremor lasting several seconds was felt in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, causing panic among people though there was no loss of life or property. The National Centre for Seismology informed that the quake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale was experienced at 3.12 a.m. in eastern Manipur’s Kamjong district, with its epicentre at a depth of 10 km.

Before that on October 3 too, a 3.9 intensity earthquake was felt in another north-eastern state, Assam, with its epicentre near Kamrup.
During the past 20 years within 50km radius of the Tamenglong earthquake location, two earthquakes of Magnitude:5.0 and above were occurred on January 3, 2016 (Magnitude:6.6) and on August 2, 2017 (Magnitude: 5.2). During this period, about 10 earthquakes occurred in the magnitude range of 4.0 and 4.9.
