Total recoveries cross 42 lakh; 19% of the global recoveries
New Delhi: India has overtaken USA and become the top country in terms of global COVID-19 recoveries and thus far reported the highest number of total recoveries with more than 42 lakh (42,08,431) COVID patients recovered and discharged. Hence, the country now accounts for close to 19% of the total global recoveries which has pushed the national Recovery Rate to nearly 80% (79.28%), which the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare described as a “landmark global achievement”, here on Saturday.

However, latest World Health Organisation figures suggest that India also has the dubious distinction of continuing to report the highest numbers of new cases of COVID-19 on a 24-hourly basis. In the last 24 hours, the country saw 93, 337 fresh cases as against USA’s 40,795 and Brazil’s 36,820. India had recently overtaken Brazil as the number two nation behind the USA with maximum number of Corona patients. India now had 53, 08, 014 total Covid-19 cases as against Brazil’s 44,19,083. USA as per the latest figures had 65, 71,119 such cases and was leading the table.
Even in terms of COVID-19 related deaths, India has earned the dubious distinction of registering the highest number of such deaths in the last 24 hours among all countries. It reported 1247 deaths during this period as against USA’s figures of 1204 deaths and Brazil’s 987 deaths.
Overall, the total deaths because of COVID-19 in the country stands at 85, 619 which is the third highest figures of deaths after USA (1,95,638 deaths) and Brazil (1,34, 106 deaths)
In the meantime, India has also scaled another peak of registering the highest ever single day recoveries in last 24 hours when a total of 95,880 recoveries were recorded.
90% of the new recovered cases were reported from 16 States/Union Territories. Of the new recovered cases, about 60% are being reported from five States – Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. Maharashtra has alone contributed more than 22,000 (23%) and Andhra Pradesh has contributed more than 11,000 (12.3%) to the single day recoveries.
Moreover, 90% of the Total Recovered cases were being reported from 15 States/UTs. The top five States with the maximum caseload -Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh were also nodal for highest number of Total Recoveries.
The Indian Health Ministry stated that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi has been hand-holding the States/UTs for enhancing the clinical management skills of doctors in the ICUs, through the ‘National eICU on COVID-19 Management’ and Centers of Excellence. “Held twice a week, on Tuesday and Friday, the sessions have aided in substantial increase of the total nationwide recovered cases and maintaining a low and steadily declining mortality rate,” it stated. It further informed that 19 such National e-ICUs had been held covering 249 hospitals of 28 States/UTs across the country, till date.
“The Centre has been regularly reviewing the assistance provided to the State/UT governments. Several high level multi-specialist Central teams have been deployed in States/UTs. These support them for strengthening Containment, Surveillance, Testing and efficient Clinical Management. The Centre has also been regularly reviewing availability of medical oxygen in the hospitals/health facilities. These have played a critical intervention role in India’s high recoveries and maintained a low Case Fatality Rate (CFR), which currently stands at 1.61%,” the Ministry claimed.
