Patna: Nagi Nakti Bird Sanctuary is located near the Jharkhand border in the Jamui district of Bihar. The vast expanse of water and forests in this serene isolated area is rich in biodiversity.
Nagi and Nakti were two rivers where the water was stored for irrigation in a dam constructed in the early seventies. The dam is today a hot spot for migratory birds and over 180 species of birds, both migratory and domestic, have been spotted in these areas.
To promote interest in birds and wildlife for city dwellers and to enable them to have a more compassionate feeling about birds, the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department, the Government of Bihar has started organising a bird festival to promote this spot for the past few years.
The Nagi Nakti Bird Festival was first organised in 2021 and has become an annual event in February every year.
This year the state government has organised a ‘car run’ to the Nagi Nakti Bird Sanctuary at Jamui and Principal Secretary of the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department Vandana Priyasi will flag off the participants from Gate Number 2 of the Sanjay Gandhi Botanical Park in Patna on February 3, 2024, at 8 am.
The ‘car run’ comprises of 25 participants drawn from Bihar and neighbouring states.
The ‘car run’ and camping experience intends to encourage conservation. The participants will be encouraged to share photos of the sanctuary on their social media to encourage wide publicity of the upcoming ‘Nagi Bird Festival’ scheduled later this month.
The President of Magadh Motor Sports Club, Bihar’s leading motorsport club for the last two decades, Pranav Sahi, said that the club was encouraging people to visit these unexplored locations in Bihar which are paradise for nature lovers.
Abhay Kumar, Conservator of Forest, Bhagalpur, said “We want to make this exciting promotional event an annual feature to encourage nature lovers to visit our lesser-known places”.
