New Delhi: Live storage available in 123 reservoirs of the country as of today was 88% of the live storage of corresponding period last year and 98% of storage of average of last ten years, Ministry of Jal Shakti stated here on Thursday.
“Central Water Commission is monitoring live storage status of 123 reservoirs of the country on weekly basis. Out of these reservoirs, 43 reservoirs have hydropower benefit with installed capacity of more than 60 MW,” the ministry stated .
The total live storage capacity of these 123 reservoirs is 171.090 Billion Cubic Meter (BCM) which is about 66.36% of the live storage capacity of 257.812 BCM which is estimated to have been created in the country.

As per reservoir storage bulletin dated August 13, 2020, live storage available in these reservoirs was 92.916 BCM, which was 54% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. However, last year the live storage available in these reservoirs for the corresponding period was 105.856 BCM and the average of last 10 years live storage was 94.348 BCM.
“Thus, the live storage available in 123 reservoirs as per 13.08.2020 Bulletin is 88% of the live storage of corresponding period of last year and 98% of storage of average of last ten years…the overall storage position is less than the corresponding period of last year in the country as a whole and is also less than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period,” it pointed out.
In the The northern region that included States of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan, there are 8 reservoirs under CWC monitoring having total live storage capacity of 19.17BCM. As per Reservoir Storage Bulletin dated August 13,2020, the total live storage available in these reservoirs was 9.77 BCM which was 51%of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 69% and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 65% of live storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year was less than the corresponding period of last year and is also less than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.
In the Eastern region that included Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Tripura and Nagaland, there are 18 reservoirs under CWC monitoring having total live storage capacity of 19.43 BCM. As per the Reservoir Storage Bulletin, the total live storage available in these reservoirs was 7.79 BCM which was 40% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 45% and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 42% of live storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year was less than the corresponding period of last year and was also less than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.
The Western region comprising Gujarat and Maharashtra have 42 reservoirs under CWC monitoring with total live storage capacity of 35.24 BCM. As per the Bulletin, the total live storage available in these reservoirs was 19.02 BCM which was 54% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 70% and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 55% of live storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year was less than the storage of last year and is also less than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.
The Central region comprising of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh with 19 reservoirs under CWC monitoring has total live storage capacity of 44.45BCM. However the total live storage available in these reservoirs was 24.26 BCM which was 55% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 56% and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 57% of live storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year was less than the storage of last year and was also less than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.
The Southern region of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, AP&TG (2combined projects in both states), Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu have 36 reservoirs under CWC monitoring with total live storage capacity of 52.81 BCM. The total live storage available in these reservoirs was 32.08 BCM which was 61% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 65% and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 55% of live storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year was less than the corresponding period of last year but was better than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.
