Misal Pav
Misal Pav enjoys immense popularity as a Mumbai street food. Misal is a spicy lentil sprout curry that is topped with farsan, sliced onion and tomato and is served along with pav.
Ingredients
(Serving for 2 to 3 persons)
Moth beans (Matki): 1 cup
Onion: 1
Tomato: 2
Garlic cloves: 2 to 3
Minced ginger: 1 tsp
Green chilli: 2
Mustard seeds: 1 tsp
Cumin seed: 1 tsp
Red chilli powder: 2 tsp
Turmeric powder: 1 tsp
Garam masala powder: 1 tsp
Ghoda masala: 1 tsp
( Optional but traditional for Maharashtrian flavour)
Tamarind pulp : ½ cup
Salt to taste
Oil : 2 tsp
For garnishing
Farsan ( crunchy fried mixture)
Chopped onion, coriander leaves
Lemon wedges
For serving
Pav (bread roll)
Step 1
Sprout the moth beans. Add the sprouted beans to a pot of water and cook until tender.
Step 2
Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seed and cumin seed. Once they splutter, add minced garlic, ginger and green chilli. Saute for a minute. Add chopped onion and cook until golden brown.
Step 3
Next to this add chopped tomatoes, red chilli, turmeric, garam masala and coriander powder along with goda masala. Cook until the tomatoes soften and the oil separates. Stir in the cooked moth and mix well.
Step 4
Finally, add the tamarind pulp and about 2 cups of water. Simmer for about 10 to 15 minutes. Add salt to taste.
Step 5
For serving, add a generous amount of misal in a bowl. Pour a spoonful of spicy gravy on the top . Garnish with farsan or Sev, chopped onion and coriander leaves. Serve hot with pav and lemon wedges on the side.
