Geneva/New Delhi: In the week ending April 4, 2021, India registered the highest number of new COVID-19 cases globally, the World Health Organisation stated here.
While India reported 5,13,885 new cases – an increase of 38% from last week, it was followed by Brazil (505 668 new cases; 5% decrease), the United States of America (444 756 new cases; 5% increase), Turkey (265 937 new cases; 43% increase), and France (244 607 new cases; 4% decrease).
New COVID-19 cases rose for a sixth consecutive week globally, with over 4 million new cases reported in the last week ending April 4, 2021.. The number of new deaths also increased by 11% compared to last week, with over 71 000 new deaths reported.
The largest increases in case incidence were observed in the South-East Asia (most notably in India) and the Western Pacific regions . All regions, except for the African Region, reported increases in the number of deaths, with the largest increase of 46% from the South-East Asia Region.
According to the WHO figures, last week (ending April 4) India with 3071 new reported deaths (0.2 new deaths per 100 000; a 71% increase), was globally placed behind only Brazil (21 094 new deaths; 9.9 new deaths per 100 000; a 26% increase), and the United States of America (7536 new deaths; 2.3 new deaths per 100 000; an 8% increase), in the global list.
In terms of fatalities India was followed by Italy (3068 new deaths; 5.1 new deaths per 100 000; a 2% increase), Poland (3057 new deaths; 8.1 new deaths per 100 000; an 18% increase), and the Russian Federation (2634 new deaths; 1.8 new deaths per 100 000; a 3% decrease).
However India claimed today that the case fatality rate in the country was continuously declining. In the country 630 deaths due to Covid-19 were reported in the last 24 hours and eight States accounted for 84.44% of the new deaths. Maharashtra saw the maximum casualties (297). Punjab follows with 61 daily deaths.
The Indian Health and Family Welfare Ministry stated today that the country’s daily new cases continue to rise and in all 1,15,736 new cases were registered in the last 24 hours. The country’s total Active Caseload today reached 8,43,473 and now comprised 6.59% of the country’s total Positive Cases. This had been a net incline of 55,250 cases recorded from the total active caseload in the last 24 hours.
Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh cumulatively accounted for 74.5% of India’s total active cases. Maharashtra alone accounted for 56.17% of the total active caseload of the country in the last 24 hours.
The Ministry said eight States including Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala had shown a rise in the COVID daily new cases. 80.70% of the new cases are reported from these 8 states. Maharashtra continued to report the highest daily new cases at 55,469. It was followed by Chhattisgarh with 9,921 while Karnataka reported 6,150 new cases.
The Indian government today claimed that it was closely monitoring and actively engaging with States/Union Territories over the rising COVID19 cases in the country.
