Mumbai: Google apps in India, including YouTube, Gmail and a host of other popular ones, are currently facing an outage situation. The trouble crept in around 5 pm IST, when a stream of social media reports poured in, complaining about the inaccessibility of a number of Google apps. The ‘Could not connect to server’ message kept displaying in many instances, on trying to reach these apps. Even the Android devices were faced with the same connectivity problem. When the services were temporarily restored in after some time, still many functions were not working properly.
With both desktop browsers and Androids being unable to access the host of commonly used Google apps for quite some time, there were theories doing the round about the current server failure. It may be scheduled maintenance or systemic bugs causing such interruption. It can also be because of delays caused at remote servers. Exploring the possibility of a criminal angle, this could also be the outcome of coordinated cyber attacks.
The exact cause of the outage being experienced by Indian users and how long it will take for normalcy to be restored was yet to be ascertained. After repeated attempts, a Google spokesperson informed globalbihari.com that nothing had come to light about this as yet.
However, the inaccessibility was also reported in sections of the local mainstream media. It cited the message that was officially displayed on accessing the site – “We are sorry, but your Gmail account is temporarily unavailable. We apologise for the inconvenience and suggest trying again in a few minutes.”
