New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today held a meeting with senior ministers and officials to discuss ways to boost manufacturing and global imprint of Indian toys.
The move assumes significance against the backdrop of a concerted move of the government to discourage import of toys from China. China accounted for 75 per cent of total imports of toys. India’s total imports of toys is worth around Rs 2,500 crore annually. In the annual budget of 2020, the government had clamped 200% hike on import duty on toys.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Modi said India was home to several toy clusters and thousands of artisans who produced indigenous toys which not only had cultural connect but also helped in building life-skills and psychomotor skills among children at an early age. He said such clusters should be promoted through innovative and creative methods.

Highlighting importance of toys in moulding a child’s mind, Modi said toys aligned with Indian culture and ethos should be used as pedagogical tools across all anganwadi centres and schools for all-round development of children. He even suggested that youth should be engaged to come up with innovative designs and toys that can instill a sense of pride towards national goals and achievements.
