New Delhi/New York: The Secretary-General of the Indian Federation of United Nations Associations (IFUNA), Suresh Srivastava, is elected as a member of the world body – the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA).
Srivastava, a practising lawyer in Delhi High Court, is also a former vice chairman of WFUNA. Elections of WFUNA were held yesterday (November 11, 2022) for the 43rd Plenary Assembly where India received 33 votes out of the total 39 votes cast by different member countries. He will have a six-year term on the WFUNA Executive Committee.
While IFUNA, affiliated to WFUNA, also enjoys a special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations and is the only body to represent India in the UN Forums, WFUNA works to strengthen and improve the United Nations by engaging global citizens.
WFUNA, which is a global nonprofit organization representing and coordinating a membership of over 100 national United Nations Associations (UNAs) and their thousands of constituents, is guided by its vision of a United Nations that is a powerful force in meeting common global challenges and opportunities. Its Secretariat is composed of three global offices located in New York, Geneva, and Seoul.
Considered the extended arm of the United Nations Organization, both WFUNA and IFUNA together strive to propagate the UN ideals to the people at large. WFUNA, the only global organization with the primary mission of supporting the principles and purposes of the United Nations, was founded in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg on August 2, 1946, by 22 United Nations Associations (UNAs), just one year after the proclamation of the UN Charter which had the opening words, “We the peoples of the United Nations”. IFUNA was established more than six decades ago by the late Acharya Narendra Dev who was a political thinker and social reformer.
IFUNA has a network of affiliated State United Nations Associations in various states of the country such as Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
