New Delhi/Tokyo: Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has congratulated Yoshihide Suga on his appointment as Japan’s 99th Prime Minister. He was a former Chief Cabinet Secretary and considered a close confidante of his predecessor and the country’s longest serving PM, Shinzo Abe, who had resigned on citing ill health on August 28, this year.

Suga was elected as the new leader of the Liberal Democratic Party in a parliamentary vote today, which sets him up to become the next prime minister of Japan. He secured 377 votes against Kishida, 89, Ishiba 68 in the LDP presidential race.

At a time when he faces a host of daunting economic challenges, Suga is expected to maintain Abenomics and seek the return of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea.
In a tweet, Prime Minister Modi said, “Heartiest congratulations to Excellency Yoshihide Suga on the appointment as Prime Minister of Japan. I look forward to jointly taking our Special Strategic and Global Partnership to new heights.”
