The high profile suicide has already made many heads turn. Some, including cine star Kangana Ranaut, have pointed towards the dark underbelly of Bollywood, names of Sushant’s glamorous girlfriend Rhea as well as big celebrities including Salman Khan, Karan Johar, Mahesh Bhatt too have come under scanner. On one hand Sushant’s father in his FIR has accused Rhea of moving away with his son’s Rs 15 crore, Ranaut had called Sushant a victim of the prevailing nepotism and cartels operating in Bollywood. She was even sent summons by the Mumbai police investigating the reason behind Sushant’s so called depression. In farway Muzaffarpur in Sushant’s home state Bihar, an advocate had gone to the extent of moving the court against A Bihar court on Wednesday dismissed a petition seeking registration of cases against Bollywood bigwigs Salman, Ekta Kapoor, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Karan Johar for allegedly abetting actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide. However the court had dismissed the petition on grounds that the matter did not fall under its jurisdiction.
Till date, more than 38 people had recorded their statements including big names like Aditya Chopra, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Shanoo Sharma, Rhea Chakraborty, Mukesh Chhabra, Sanjana Sanghi, Rumi Jafry and others.
On July 29, Bollywood honcho Mahesh Bhatt as well as Dharma Productions CEO Apoorva Mehta too were summoned by police.
The pictures of Bhatt with Rhea on his birthday, posted by the latter on her social media account had gone viral and she was being trolled to which she had said cryptically that “kuchh to log kahenge“.
The summoning of Mehta too is significant. It may be mentioned that in her statement during her over eight hours interrogation at Bandra police station on June 18 (Sushant was found dead on June 14), Rhea had reportedly claimed that Sushant was upset over the nature of his contract with a leading production house. She had reported to have told police that Rajput had a three-film contract with the production house when in 2012 he was offered a film by another leading filmmaker, but the production house did not allow him to work with the filmmaker citing the contract terms.
Today Mehta reportedly presented a copy of the agreement with Sushant for the film Drive, that was released a year ago on Netflix.
Bhatt on his part said after registering his statement, “I don’t support nepotism. I have given so many newcomers their first chance. I have met Sushant Singh in person only twice, once in 2018 about my book and again in 2020.” He further claimed that he had never asked Rhea to leave Sushant and termed all rumours (of his alleged relationship with Rhea) as baseless.
Rhea’s own role had been under scanner even before Sushant’s father filed the FIR against her. Almost a month after Sushant’s alleged suicide that Rhea appeared on social media with an emotional post about Sushant but more surprises were to unfold though and Rhea, on July 23, dramatically took to her twitter handle, tagging Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking a CBI probe into Sushant’s death. She had tweeted: “Respected @AmitShah sir, I’m Sushant Singh Rajput’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty, it is now over a month since his sudden demise. I have complete faith in the government. However, in the interest of justice, I request you with folded hands to initiate a CBI enquiry into this matter. I only want to understand what pressures prompted Sushant to take this step.”
Earlier this month, she had also lodged a complaint with the police against two Instagram account holders who allegedly threatened to rape and kill her.
The Sushant suicide issue is not just becoming curiouser with every passing day, but has also given some brownie points to the political parties in poll-bound Bihar. To go with the sentiments of the people of Sushant’s home state, Lok Janshakti Party president Chirag Paswan had addressed Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray requesting CBI inquiry for the case.
