New Delhi: Just a day after ‘Very Severe’ Cyclonic Storm ‘Tauktae’ wrought destruction in the western and south western coastal states, the Met department warned of yet another cyclone, this time in the Bay of Bengal, to hit the eastern states of Odisha and West Bengal on May 26, 2021. Last year also, there were two cyclones – one each in Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea – the had hit coastal India in quick succession.
The Met department today said a likely formation of a low pressure area over north Andaman Sea and adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal around May 22 might intensify into a Cyclonic Storm. “A low pressure area is very likely to form over north Andaman Sea and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal around 22nd May. It is very likely to intensify gradually into a Cyclonic Storm during the subsequent 72 hours. It is very likely to move northwestwards and reach West Bengal – Odisha coasts around 26th May evening,” it said.

Forecasting rough to very rough sea conditions over southeast Bay of Bengal and south Andaman Sea from May 21 onwards, it warned that the conditions will be rough to very rough over Andaman Sea and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal on May 23, and high to very high over major parts of central Bay of Bengal during May 24 – 26and into north Bay of Bengal and along and off Odisha – West Bengal coasts during May 25 – 27.
Squally wind speed reaching 45–55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph is likely to prevail over Andaman Sea and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal on May 23. It is very likely to increase, becoming 50–60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph from May 23 and further becoming Gale wind speed during May 24 – 26 over major parts of central Bay of Bengal and into north Bay of Bengal and along and off Odisha – West Bengal – Bangladesh coasts during May 25 – 27.
The fishermen have been advised not to venture into southeast Bay of Bengal and south Andaman Sea from May 21 onwards, into central Bay of Bengal from May 23 – 25 and into north Bay of Bengal along and off West Bengal – Odisha – Bangladesh coasts between May 25 and May 27. “Those who are out in the Deep Sea are advised to return to the coast by May 23,” it stated.
