New Delhi: In his first major reshuffle of the Council of Ministers in the second term of the Bharatiya Janata Party government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inducted 43 new ministers including 15 of Cabinet rank, today. Before the reshuffle, several senior ministers resigned from their positions.
President Ramnath Kovind, as advised by the Prime Minister, accepted the resignation of 12 members of the Council of Ministers, with immediate effect. The ministers who resigned were: D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Thaawarchand Gehlot, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Prakash Javadekar, Santosh Kumar Gangwar, Babul Supriyo, Dhotre Sanjay Shamrao, Rattan Lal Kataria, Pratap Chandra Sarangi and Debasree Chaudhuri.
The President, as advised by the Prime Minister, appointed the new members of the Council of Ministers and administered them oath of office and secrecy at a ceremony held in the Rashtrapati Bhavan, today. First time MPs Bharati Pawar (Maharashtra), Bishweswar Tudu (Odisha), Shantanu Thakur (West Bengal) too sworn in as Union Ministers of State. Seven Ministers of State got elevated to the Cabinet rank. Jyotiraditya Scindia, who had defected from the Congress, got the Cabinet portfolio.
Modi congratulated all the colleagues who took oath today and wished them the very best for their ministerial tenure.
