Guwahati: The family members as well as the Press Club of Assam (PCA) today demanded a thorough probe into the “mysterious” death of photojournalist Dhanti Hira (25) at Samaguri in Nagaon district. The family members of Dhanti alleged that he was attacked by a group of people at the spot of the accident and subsequently died while returning home from Samaguri with two of his friends on a bike on July 16, 2023. The Nagaon police personnel reached the spot and recovered the bike from the location.
Dhanti worked for a city-based satellite news channel NKTV. The Press Club of Assam stated his bike had hit two youths at Khatowal and that erupted with hot arguments following which the photojournalist was attacked while his two friends fled from the location. Some locals took Dhanti to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.,
While expressing “profound” grief at the untimely demise of Dhanti, the Press Club of Assam today demanded an authentic probe into the incident.
“The two fleeing friends should come forward, helping the investigating police officers to unearth the entire episode that led to Dhanti’s tragic death,” said PCA president Kailash Sarma, working president Nava Thakuria and general secretary Hiren Ch Kalita. They also urged the news channel management to adequately support the bereaved family at this time of sorrow and grief.
