Pushkar Singh Dhami
Dehradun: Pushkar Singh Dhami took oath as 11th Uttarakhand Chief Minister today, following the ouster of his predecessor Tirath Singh Rawat, who had handed over his resignation letter on Friday July 2, 2021. He is the third Bharatiya Janata Party leader to be sworn-in as CM since the last state elections in 2017 in which the BJP had come to power in the state.
Tirath Singh Rawat had taken charge barely fourth months ago, in March 2021, after fierce dissent within the ranks of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party against the then CM Trivendra Rawat.
When Tirath Singh Rawat had taken oath as the CM, he was a Member of Parliament and was required to become the member of the State House before September 10, 2021, that was within the stipulated six months of being appointed CM. Rawat did not contest the by-election for the Salt (Uttarakhand Assembly constituency) seat in April 2021, as he had tested positive for COVID-19 on March 22, 2021. There were two subsequent vacancies in the state assembly, but these occurred less than a year before the term of the assembly was due to end on March 22, 2022, and by-elections are not meant to be held in the last year of the assembly’s term of office. Since Rawat could not get elected to the state assembly within the deadline, he and his cabinet colleagues resigned on July 2, 2021His resignation comes ahead of the Assembly polls next year in the state.
Besides, Tirath’s brief stint as CM too was marred with controversies with the state BJP unit complaining to the BJP national leadership about the growing public anger at some of his decisions, that reportedly worked against him.
Prime MinisterNarendra Modi today congratulated Dhami, who at 45 is the youngest to don the mantle of the Chief Minister in the state, on taking oath as the CM of Uttarakhand. He also congratulated all others who took oath today. In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, “Congratulations to Shri @pushkardhami and all others who took oath today. Best wishes to this team as they work towards the progress and prosperity of Uttarakhand.”
