Aizawl: Union Home Minister Amit Shah oversaw the transfer of land from the Assam Rifles Battalion to the Government of Mizoram, along with the formal exchange of maps, here today.
Since the establishment of the first army camp in Aizawl in 1890, this marks the most significant decision for the region, Shah asserted. He characterized this event as a pivotal moment in the development of Mizoram, emphasizing that for nearly 35 years, there has been a persistent demand to relocate the Assam Rifles to more interior locations due to the spatial limitations imposed by the region’s topography. This relocation is expected to facilitate the overall advancement of Mizoram, including its capital, Aizawl.
Shah pointed out that the severe lack of space in Aizawl has been hindering its modernization and the expansion of public amenities. He attributed the realization of this long-standing demand to the decisive action taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Union Home Minister emphasized that this decision goes beyond simple administrative measures; it embodies the Union Government’s commitment to the people of Mizoram and its dedication to fostering the state’s development. He asserted that Prime Minister Modi’s visionary decision will liberate a considerable expanse of land in a vital area of Mizoram, thereby providing a fresh impetus for the state’s growth.
The Union Home Minister brought attention to several significant infrastructure projects in Mizoram, including the initiation of Package-1 and Package-3 of National Highway 502-A, which has a budget of ₹2,500 crore. Additionally, a four-lane road is being built along National Highway 6 in the Aizawl and Kolasib districts, with an investment of ₹1,742 crore. The project to double the Aizawl-Tuipang National Highway 54 is also underway, backed by ₹1,600 crore. Furthermore, bamboo link roads worth ₹100 crore have been constructed in different areas of Mizoram.
Shah mentioned the establishment of 10 helipads at a cost of ₹2 crore and the successful completion of the Bairabi-Sairang Railway project, which required ₹5,000 crore. He also noted that a 164-bed super speciality research centre is currently being built for ₹600 crore, and the Tuirial Hydro Power Project has been launched with an investment of ₹1,300 crore. To boost digital connectivity, 214 mobile towers have been installed across the state. He reiterated the Government of India’s strong commitment to ensuring that Mizoram remains developed, peaceful, secure, and beautiful.
A host of dignitaries, including Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, the Union Home Secretary, the Director of the Intelligence Bureau, and the Director General of Assam Rifles, attended the event.
