New Delhi: Bangladesh media reported at least two deaths caused by squally winds caused by cyclone “Midhili” that uprooted trees in Sandwip and Mirsharai, upazilas of Chattogram today afternoon. The deceased were identified as Abdul Wahab, a 65-year-old resident of Magdhara Union in Sandwip, and Siddratul Muntaha, a three-year-old girl from the South Sonapahar area of Jorarganj Union in Mirsharai. Wahab was reportedly offering prayers in a mosque when a tree branch broke and fell on him.
The cyclonic storm “Midhili” (pronounced as “Midhili”) over the Northeast and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal close to the Bangladesh coast moved north-northeastwards with a speed of 37 kmph and crossed the Bangladesh coast near Khepupara during 1430-1530 hours IST.
It then continued to move north-northeastwards across the Islands of Bangladesh with a maximum sustained surface wind speed of 65-75 kmph gusting to 85 kmph and lay centred at 1730 hours IST today over Coastal Bangladesh near latitude 22.8°North and longitude 90.8°East about 20 km east-northeast of Bhola, 30 km west-southwest of Maijdicourt, 110 km northeast of Khepupara and 120 km southwest of Chittagong (Bangladesh).
Thereafter, it moved north-northeastwards with a speed of 32 kmph and lay centred at 2030 hours IST over Coastal Bangladesh near latitude 23.2°N and longitude 91.1°E about 80 km northeast of Bhola (Bangladesh), 30 km north of Maijdicourt (Bangladesh), 70 km south-southwest of Agartala and 240 km southwest of Silchar.
It is likely to move north-northeastwards and weaken into a Deep Depression over Tripura and adjoining Bangladesh and then into a Depression over south Assam and adjoining Mizoram-Tripura, the India Meteorological Department said.
As high sea condition prevails over the Northeast adjoining the Northwest Bay of Bengal and along and off Bangladesh coast and is likely to become very rough to rough from midnight of November 17 till the morning of November 18, 2023, Fishermen were advised not to venture into the Northeast adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal and along and off Bangladesh coast till the morning of November 18. The condition will improve thereafter, the IMD said.
