Guwahati: Veteran Congress leader and former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi is in extremely critical condition as most of his organs have stopped functioning. The outspoken politician, still a legislator from Titabar assembly constituency, is breathing with the help of medical support systems. Octogenarian Gogoi showed some improvements on Sunday morning but slowly went to unconscious condition.
The attending doctors at Guwahati medical college and hospital informed that Gogoi is presently on complete life support machines. Except some signs related to his brain and eyes, all other organs have already stopped functioning. It is a case of multiple organ failure. Meanwhile, his son Gaurav Gogoi, a Lok Sabha Parliamentarian along with the family members have arrived at the hospital.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, high profile BJP and Congress leaders called Gaurav enquiring about his father’s health condition. Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who was is Dibrugarh, had rushed to Guwahati. State health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma continued looking over his care at the government run hospital. Moreover, people across the State have been praying to God for his recovery.
Gogoi, who tested positive for Covid-19 few weeks back, was admitted to the hospital on 1 November with breathing problems. Earlier he was discharged from the hospital on 25 October after some improvements. Gogoi was hospitalized on 26 August as he tested positive for novel corona virus infection. The doctors continued his treatment with consultations from physicians in AIIMS New Delhi.
Born on 1 April 1936 to Dr Kamaleshwar Gogoi and Usha Gogoi at Rangajan in eastern Assam, Gogoi served the State as Chief Minister from 2001 to 2016 without interruption. Earlier he was elected to Lok Sabha for six times and also functioned as a Central minister for some time. Gogoi did his graduation from Jagannath Barooah College, Jorhat and did LLB from Gauhati University. Married to Dolly Gogoi, the couple has one son (Gaurav) and a daughter (Chandrima).
