New Delhi: India’s renewable energy capacity surged to 220.10 GW in FY 2024-25, with a record 29.52 GW added, up from 198.75 GW last year, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy reported today. Solar power reached 105.65 GW, wind hit 50.04 GW, advancing the nation towards its 500 GW non-fossil fuel target by 2030, set under the government’s ‘Panchamrit’ goals.
Solar energy added 23.83 GW this year, compared to 15.03 GW in FY 2023-24, with 81.01 GW from ground-mounted installations, 17.02 GW from rooftop solar, 2.87 GW from hybrid projects, and 4.74 GW from off-grid systems. Wind power grew by 4.15 GW, up from 3.25 GW the previous year, reaching a total of 50.04 GW. Bioenergy stands at 11.58 GW, including 0.53 GW from off-grid and waste-to-energy projects, while small hydro power totals 5.10 GW, with 0.44 GW currently under implementation.
Renewable energy projects worth 169.40 GW are in progress, and 65.06 GW have been tendered, including 65.29 GW from hybrid systems, round-the-clock power, peaking power, and thermal-RE bundling projects aimed at ensuring grid stability. The MNRE, under Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, oversees these initiatives to meet the 2030 target, reflecting India’s commitments to climate goals and energy security through sustained renewable energy deployment.
Solar’s 23.83 GW addition outpaced last year’s 15.03 GW, with ground-mounted plants contributing 81.01 GW, rooftops adding 17.02 GW across urban and rural households, hybrids providing 2.87 GW by combining sources, and off-grid systems delivering 4.74 GW to areas beyond the grid. Wind’s 4.15 GW growth builds on 3.25 GW from FY 2023-24, bringing its cumulative capacity to 50.04 GW, a steady component of the renewable mix. Bioenergy’s 11.58 GW includes 0.53 GW from off-grid and waste-to-energy efforts, utilizing local resources, while small hydro’s 5.10 GW, with 0.44 GW in the pipeline, taps into river systems for power.
The 29.52 GW added this year marks a significant jump, lifting total capacity from 198.75 GW to 220.10 GW, the Ministry claimed. Beyond installed figures, the 169.40 GW under implementation and 65.06 GW tendered show a strong future pipeline, with 65.29 GW from hybrid systems, round-the-clock power, peaking power, and thermal-RE bundling projects ensuring a reliable supply. The MNRE’s efforts under Joshi align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 500 GW vision, integrating solar, wind, bioenergy, and small hydro into India’s clean energy framework, the Ministry stated. It added, “The continued growth reflects India’s commitment to its climate goals and energy security, underscoring the Government’s focused efforts to scale up renewable energy deployment across the country”.
