Pradyot Kishore Tipraha
Agartala: The Bharatiya Janata Party, the ruling party in Tripura, and its alliance partner, the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT), lost to the alliance led by royal scion Pradyot Kishore Tipraha’s four-month-old political outfit – the Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA), at the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections today.
In the process, TIPRA emerged as the single largest party with 16 seats out of 23 it had contested while its ally, the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra (INPT) won two seats. The BJP could win nine seats out of 14 seats it had contested, while its ally IPFT could not open its account. While an Independent won in one seat, even the CPI(M) and the Congress drew a blank in the election.
The council has 30 seats but the election was held for 28 seats on April 6, 2021. In the last ADC election, held in May 2015, the CPI (M)-led Left Front won 25 seats and formed the council.
It may be mentioned that in 2000, IPFT had captured ADC by winning 18 seats of 28 allegedly with the help of insurgent group, the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT).
