The new Satna airport
Bhopal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today virtually inaugurated Satna Airport and the upgraded Datia Airport in Madhya Pradesh, marking a significant step in enhancing regional connectivity across the Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand regions. The event, held simultaneously at both locations, saw physical ceremonies attended by key dignitaries, reflecting the Government of India’s commitment to expanding air travel access through the Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN) scheme, aimed at connecting smaller cities to the national aviation network.
Satna Airport, developed by the Airports Authority of India at a cost of ₹36.96 crore, is positioned to become a vital hub in northeastern Madhya Pradesh. The facility, located in a region known for its cultural and industrial significance, will connect key destinations like Chitrakoot and Maihar. Its terminal, spanning 768 square meters, can handle 50 passengers during peak hours and up to 250,000 annually. The airport features a recarpeted runway, apron facilities for Dornier-228 aircraft, an Air Traffic Control tower, and a fire station. Sustainability measures include 100 per cent Light Emitting Diode lighting, solar streetlights, and treated water reuse systems for horticulture, aligning with eco-friendly development goals.
The upgraded Datia Airport, built at a cost of ₹60.63 crore, integrates the historic town into India’s aviation network. With a terminal of 768 square meters, it can accommodate 150 peak-hour passengers and an annual footfall of 250,000. Designed for Avions de Transport Régional-72 aircraft, with provisions for future Airbus A-320 operations, the airport facilitates access to cultural landmarks like Peetambara Peeth and Datia Palace. Its infrastructure includes a newly recarpeted runway, apron bays, an Air Traffic Control tower, and a fire station, complemented by rainwater harvesting and energy-efficient lighting systems.
The operationalisation of these airports is set to deliver economic and social benefits, creating direct and indirect employment opportunities and fostering growth in sectors such as hospitality, retail, education, and healthcare. By improving connectivity, these projects align with the government’s vision of inclusive development, ensuring that even remote regions are integrated into India’s broader economic framework.
At Datia, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu addressed the gathering, noting the spiritual significance of the town, often called ‘Mini Vrindavan,’ and its newfound connectivity. He highlighted the role of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav in driving aviation infrastructure growth in Madhya Pradesh, emphasising that these airports will serve as gateways to economic opportunities.
The ceremony at Satna was attended by Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, who underscored the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s focus on improving accessibility and supporting local economies. Governor of Madhya Pradesh Mangubhai C. Patel, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Deputy Chief Ministers Rajendra Shukla and Jagdish Devda, Ministry of Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha, and Airports Authority of India Chairman Vipin Kumar were among the prominent figures present at the events, joined by other senior officials and public representatives.
