Biennial elections to Bihar Legislative Council from 24 Local Authorities’ Constituencies to be held on April 4, 2022
New Delhi: The term of office of 13 members of the Rajya Sabha elected from 6 States is due to expire on their retirement in April, 2022. The Election Commission of India announced today that biennial elections to the Council of States to fill these seats will take place on March 31, 2022.
Following are the details of the Rajya Sabha members whose terms are expiring in April:
Out of the five seats to be filled from Punjab three are to be filled by holding one election and other two through another election as these seats belong to two different biennial cycles. Further, the term of office of the members to be elected to the Council of States from the State of Punjab shall be subject to the decision of the Supreme Court in SLP(C) No. 17123/2015 (Election Commission of India Vs Devesh Chandra Thakur & Others), the ECI stated.
Meanwhile, the biennial elections to Bihar Legislative Council from 24 Local Authorities’ Constituencies will be held on April 4, 2022. Following are the details of the constituencies:
It may be mentioned that the biennial elections to fill up the 24 seats could not be conducted by July 16, 2021, as the Constituent Local Bodies/Electors therein were not in existence at that time. The Commission on May 21, 2021 had sought information regarding existence of constituent Local Bodies functioning and their percentage in the said Constituencies. The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Bihar on May 27, 2021, had informed that the term of all Rural Local Bodies which constitute 97.56% of the total electoral college for said election was to expire on June 15, 2021, and accordingly, said the election could not be held at that time.
The CEO, Bihar on December 27, 2021, submitted the updated status regarding and stated more than 75% per cent of Local Bodies were functioning as well as electors therein in all 24 Local Authorities’ Constituencies.
The ECI stated that the term of office of the members to be elected to the Bihar Legislative Council from the said Local Authorities’ Constituencies shall be subject to the decision of the Supreme Court of India in SLP(C) No. 17123/2015 (Election Commission of India Vs Devesh Chandra Thakur & Others).
