Patna: Three new judges of Patna High Court were administered the oath of office by the Acting Chief Justice of Patna High Court here today.
Acting Chief Justice of Patna High Court Ashutosh Kumar administered the oath of office to advocates Alok Kumar Sinha, Soni Shrivastava and Sourendra Pandey as judges of the Court in the same order of seniority.
In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with Chief Justice of India, had appointed these three as judges in the Patna High Court.
It may be mentioned that the Supreme Court Collegium in its meeting held on February 20, 2025, had approved the proposal for their appointment as judges of the Patna High Court. The Collegium had also recommended the names of advocates Ritesh Kumar and Ansul @ Anshul Raj. However, their appointments are still pending final approval from the Central Government and the President of India. The appointment process requires multiple stages, including background checks and formal approvals, which can take several weeks or months to complete. Therefore, the two have not yet assumed their positions as judges.
As of March 8, 2025, the Patna High Court has a sanctioned strength of 53 judges. With the recent appointment of three new judges, the current number of sitting judges has increased from 34 to 37. Consequently, there are 16 vacant positions in the Patna High Court as of today.
Meanwhile, in Kolkata Smita Das De, Reetobroto Kumar Mitra, and Om Narayan Rai, were appointed as Additional Judges of Calcutta High Court today.
