Budapest: Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra made India proud again by winning the gold medal in the men’s javelin event at the World Athletics Championships here. He hit an 88.17-metre mark in his second attempt to surge ahead of his arch-rival Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan who threw 87.82 metres.

Chopra has become the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championship. With this performance, he has also now qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Besides clinching the gold here, he already he has in his kitty,an Asian Games gold medal, a Commonwealth Games gold medal, a Diamond League title, an Asian Championships gold and an Under-20 World title.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today congratulated Neeraj Chopra for winning the Gold at the World Athletics Championships and said in an X post: “The talented @Neeraj_chopra1 exemplifies excellence. His dedication, precision and passion make him not just a champion in athletics but a symbol of unparalleled excellence in the entire sports world. Congrats to him for winning the Gold at the World Athletics Championships.”
India’s Kishore Jena stood fifth while DP Manu stood sixth in the titular fight in the championships.
