Budapest: Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra made India proud again by winning the gold medal in the men’s javelin event at the World Athletics Championships here. He hit an 88.17-metre mark in his second attempt to surge ahead of his arch-rival Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan who threw 87.82 metres.

Chopra has become the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championship. With this performance, he has also now qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Besides clinching the gold here, he already he has in his kitty,an Asian Games gold medal, a Commonwealth Games gold medal, a Diamond League title, an Asian Championships gold and an Under-20 World title.

India’s Kishore Jena stood fifth while DP Manu stood sixth in the titular fight in the championships.
