New Delhi: Justice Sanjiv Khanna was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India at a ceremony held today at 10.00 am in the Ganatantra Mandap, Rashtrapati Bhavan. He succeeds Justice DY Chandrachud who retired on November 8, 2024.
Justice Khanna made and subscribed to the oath of office before the President, Droupadi Murmu, as the 51st Chief Justice of India. He will serve as the Chief Justice of India for a tenure of six months since his retirement is expected on May 13, 2025. He has been a Supreme Court judge since January 2019. During his career as an apex court judge, he passed some notable judgments that included scrapping the electoral bonds scheme, upholding the abrogation of Article 370 as well as the sanctity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), and the grant of interim bail to former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his best wishes to Justice Sanjiv Khanna on taking oath as Chief Justice of Supreme Court of India.
“Attended the oath taking ceremony of Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who has been sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India. My best wishes for his tenure,” the Prime Minister posted on social media platform X.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna belongs to a family of legal luminouries. His father Justice Dev Raj Khanna was a judge of Delhi High Court. His uncle Jusitice Hans Raj Khanna had resigned after falling out of favour of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during Emergency and superseded by Justice MM Beg to the Office of Chief Justice of India in 1977, but went on to become Union Law and Justice Minister, and thereafter the combined opposition-sponsored candidate for election as President of India when he lost to Zail Singh in 1982.
