US Presidential Elections 2020
Kamala Harris Makes History
Washington: Following win in Pennsylvania and after securing 20 electoral votes,, the road has become clear for Democrat Joseph Robinette Biden Jr., popularly known as Joe Biden, to take charge as the 46th President of the United States of America.
Biden in a statement today said: “I am honored and humbled by the trust the American people have placed in me and in Vice President-elect (Kamala) Harris.” He had earlier also served as the 47th Vice President of the US under Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017.
Vice President-elect Kamala Devi Harris, 56, daughter of Donald Jasper Harris – a Jamaican-American economist and professor emeritus at Stanford University, and late Shyamala Gopalan – an Indian American biomedical scientist, born in Tamil Nadu, today made history on three counts — as first woman Vice President of USA, as first Black Vice President, and First South Asian American Vice President. Her husband Douglas Emhoff is an American lawyer.
“My mother always told me, ‘you may be the first to do many things, but make sure you’re not the last,” Kamala said today.

US Presidential Election has the makings of a thrilling cliff hanger
The election of Biden as US President and Kamala as Vice President is significant from Indian perspective. While Kamala’s Indian antecedents are well known, Biden had played an important role in strengthening ties with India as US Vice President. In 2006, three years before he became the Vice-President of the US, Biden had stated: “My dream is that in 2020, the two closest nations in the world will be India and the United States.”
Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Joe Biden on winning the U.S. presidential election.
“Congratulations Joe Biden on your spectacular victory! As the VP, your contribution to strengthening Indo-US relations was critical and invaluable. I look forward to working closely together once again to take India-US relations to greater heights,” Modi said.
Modi also congratulated Kamala Harris and said in his message: “Heartiest congratulations Kamala Harris! Your success is pathbreaking, and a matter of immense pride not just for your chittis, but also for all Indian-Americans. I am confident that the vibrant India-US ties will get even stronger with your support and leadership.”
