Tehran: Iran’s President Dr Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi emphasised the need for India to compensate for the delay in the implementation of commitments, and asked New Delhi to accelerate the implementation of the agreements between the two countries, including the Chabahar Port Development Plan, according to a press release issued by the Iran President’s office today.
In a meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister of Foreign Affairs of India, Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, on January 15, 2024, Dr Raisi also stressed that it was “important for India to play a role in ending the bombings, lifting the blockade of this region and realising the rights of the Palestinian people”.
“Stopping the attacks on Gaza, punishing the Zionist regime and fulfilling the rights of the Palestinian people is the only way to return stability and security to the region,” he said.
“The importance of the common view of the two countries in the field of combating terrorism and organised crime”, “The need for cooperation to establish stability and security in Afghanistan”, “Strengthening international trade, especially through national currencies” and “Emphasis on maintaining the security of shipping in international waters” were the main points of the President in the meeting with the Indian Foreign Minister, according to the release.
Dr Jaishankar, while announcing the country’s interest in concluding a comprehensive and long-term cooperation agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran, emphasised India’s complete adherence to its commitments in the Chabahar port development project as well as comprehensive development of cooperation with Iran.
Earlier, Dr Jaishankar in the course of his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran Dr. Amir-Abdollahia, emphasised India’s commitment to the development and operation of the Chabahar port, “a joint project with a joint vision of connectivity”. Both discussed ways to establish a firm, sustainable and long-term roadmap, for India’s continued involvement over the coming years. “Given the importance of this project for both nations, I emphasised the need to monitor its progress under the direct supervision of the political leadership,” he stated.
He also reiterated India’s interest in benefiting from Iran’s unique geographical position to access markets in Central Asia, Afghanistan and Eurasia, and discussed the prospects of energising the International North-South Transport Corridor.
Amirabdollahian pointed to India’s positive and constructive role in Iran’s membership in two important organizations, namely BRICS and the SCO, adding regional and multilateral strategic cooperation between the two countries and other members of the two organizations should be bolstered and elevated.
Amirabdollahian also stated that Yemeni leaders, while underlining shipping security, stress that as long as the war and genocide continue in Gaza, they will stop only the ships that are sailing towards the occupied territories to deliver arms for the war.
During his meeting with Dr. Raisi, Dr Jaishankar also expressed his condolences and sympathies with the government and people of Iran following the recent terrorist incident in Kerman, and thanked the efforts of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran to develop relations with the countries of the region and create a significant change in relations with India.
