New Report Highlights India’s Rise in Science, Technology
New Delhi: NITI Aayog, India’s premier policy think tank, today launched a comprehensive report titled “Pathways to Progress: Analysis and Insights into India’s Innovation Story” in the capital, marking a significant step in documenting the nation’s strides in science, technology, and innovation. The report offers an in-depth examination of India’s innovation landscape, detailing its achievements, identifying persistent challenges, and outlining a strategic roadmap to elevate the country’s standing as a global innovation hub.
The document presents a broad perspective on India’s innovation ecosystem, covering national and state-level initiatives, contributions from industry, grassroots innovations, and the burgeoning startup sector. It also highlights the critical role of collaborations between universities, industries, and government bodies in driving progress. Additionally, the report evaluates India’s position in global innovation rankings, shedding light on areas of strength and opportunities for growth. It emphasises the need to scale successful models, foster advancements in deep technology, strengthen knowledge creation, enhance global integration, and build innovation capacity across states to sustain and accelerate India’s momentum.
The launch event, held in New Delhi, underscored NITI Aayog’s commitment to fostering a knowledge-driven and innovation-led economy, aligning with India’s ambition to emerge as a global leader in science, technology, and entrepreneurship. Dr Deepak Bagla, Mission Director of the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), spoke at the event about AIM’s pivotal role in nurturing entrepreneurial talent and fostering a vibrant startup culture across the country. He highlighted how the mission has been instrumental in scaling innovation and creating an environment conducive to entrepreneurship.
Dr V.K. Saraswat, Member of NITI Aayog, emphasised the strategic importance of science, technology, and innovation in shaping India’s development trajectory. He noted that the report provides evidence-based insights that can guide policymaking, strengthen institutional linkages, and enhance collaboration among academia, industry, and government to drive sustainable progress.
Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Science & Technology, spoke about the pervasive nature of innovation in India, which extends beyond cutting-edge technologies to include solutions tailored to local needs. He highlighted the government’s efforts to advance research, promote technology development, and facilitate the commercialisation of innovations across various sectors. Dr Singh stressed the importance of inclusive and context-driven innovation that addresses real-world challenges while bolstering India’s global competitiveness and fostering equitable, sustainable growth.
Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Education and the chief guest at the event, delivered the keynote address, emphasising India’s progress in building a robust innovation ecosystem. He called for leveraging the country’s youth, talent, and institutional strengths to position India as a global brand of excellence in knowledge, science, and technology. Pradhan underscored the need for scalable and inclusive innovation to ensure that India’s growth benefits all sections of society.
The event saw participation from key government officials, including the Secretaries of the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), and Department of School Education & Literacy (DSEL), alongside Program Directors from NITI Aayog. Their presence highlighted the government’s unified commitment to advancing India’s innovation ecosystem and positioning the country as a global leader in science and technology.
