Jaismine, Minakshi shine with historic boxing golds
Liverpool: Indian boxing witnessed a historic moment as Jaismine Lamboria clinched the gold medal in the women’s 57 kg category at the World Boxing Championships 2025, defeating Olympic silver medallist Julia Szeremeta of Poland with a 4-1 split decision. The final match saw a tight contest with round-by-round details reflecting Jaismine’s grit and tactical brilliance.
The opening round was narrowly claimed by Szeremeta, 3-2 on the judges’ scorecards, as she aggressively used sharp counter-attacks and precise jabs to rattle Jaismine. The atmosphere was intense, fueled by a strong contingent of Polish supporters cheering for Szeremeta. However, the Indian southpaw grew into the bout from the second round, adjusting her rhythm, increasing her control of distance using her height and reach advantage, and delivering crisp counter-punches that swayed all five judges. Jaismine’s commanding performance in the second round earned her a unanimous 5-0 score, signalling a strategic masterclass.
In the third and decisive round, Jaismine continued her dominance with fast left hooks and maintained a tactical range battle that left Szeremeta increasingly desperate and off-balance. Judges awarded Jaismine four out of five rounds, securing the 4-1 victory with scores of 30-27, 29-28 twice, and a sole dissenting 28-29.
Speaking after the victory, an emotional Jaismine Lamboria said, “This feeling can’t be expressed. I’m so happy to be a world champion. After my early exit at Paris 2024, I went away and improved my technique physically and mentally. This is the result of consistent work for a year.” She added, “I had got out in the quarterfinals in the previous two Worlds, but I got the boost from the World Cup win, and I decided I want to win one-sided matches. I just concentrated on my strategy and game”.

A day earlier, fellow Indian Minakshi Hooda followed with a gold medal win in the 48 kg category by defeating Kazakhstan’s Nazym Kyzaibay, the Paris Olympics bronze medallist, with a 4-1 scoreline. This victory was especially satisfying for Minakshi as it served as revenge for her earlier loss to Kyzaibay at the World Cup final in July 2025. Minakshi’s relentless punching and technical precision helped secure the win, continuing her pattern of medaling at every international event she has participated in.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today congratulated both Jaismine and Minakshi for their outstanding achievements. He praised their dedication, hard work, and the pride they brought to India on the global stage. The Prime Minister’s message highlighted the significance of their wins as milestones for Indian boxing, inspiring the youth and strengthening India’s position in international boxing.
India’s campaign at Liverpool was its best-ever at the World Boxing Championships, with Jaismine and Minakshi’s golds complemented by Nupur Sheoran’s silver in the +80 kg category and Pooja Rani’s bronze in the 80 kg category, showcasing the growing depth and talent of Indian women’s boxing.
This triumph marked Jaismine Lamboria’s arrival among boxing elites as the ninth Indian world champion, joining legends like Mary Kom and Nikhat Zareen. Her journey from a disappointing Olympic exit to world champion epitomises resilience and commitment, reflecting a bright future for Indian boxing.
