New Delhi: Justice (Retd.) Shambhu Nath Srivastava, a former judge of Allahabad High Court and former chief Lokayukta of Chhattisgarh, has been appointed as the chairman of Indian Federation of United Nations Associations. He succeeds Dr. Mukul Sangma, a former Chief Minister of Meghalaya.
Justice Srivastava was elected unanimously by the IFUNA Executive Committee members here on June 27, 2021.
Former Union Minister Bijoya Chakraborty is the president of IFUNA, which in the past had a galaxy of luminaries such as late Vijayalaxmi Pandit, former president of United Nations General Assembly, Late Savitri Nigam, Member of Parliament, Late Rajan Nehru, Member of Parliament, Former Union Minister Late Ram Krishan Hegde, and Late Ram Niwas Mirdha, Member of Parliament, adorning the office of IFUNA’s president.
Chakraborty said under the guidance of Justice Srivastava, the IFUNA family will grow more and more and create further impact on UN fora. Justice Srivastava said he will work to expand the organisation and implement its plans across the country with the support of the UN agencies.
IFUNA, affiliated to the World Federation of United Nations Associations, (WFUNA) Geneva, enjoys special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations. It brings people and issues together to promote collective action for a sustainable world.
IFUNA is the only body to represent India in the U.N. Forums. Considered as the extended arm of the United Nations Organisation, both WFUNA and IFUNA strive to take the ideals of the United Nations to the people.
Established more than six decades ago to promote the objectives of the United Nations and its Specialized Agencies, IFUNA is a Non-governmental, Voluntary, Nonprofit Organization working for International Peace and Understanding. It strives to focus its programs and activities around the vital concerns of the United Nations, like, Peace, International Understanding, Environment and Human Rights. It maintains close liaisons with Government Organizations, Press and Diplomatic Missions interested in United Nations activities.
IFUNA has already created a niche for itself in the academic and social circles of the country through its varied and numerous activities like Lectures, Seminars, Symposiums, and Observance of U.N. Days, Debates, Competitions and Exhibitions on U.N Subjects. It also runs the Institute of United Nations Studies, which was established in 1969 as Department of Indian Federation of United Nations Associations, under the Chairmanship of Dr. Nagendera Singh, ICS, who was later on elevated to the position of President of the International Court of Justice, The Hague. The institute conducts a six months Correspondence course on United Nations and International Understanding, to impart knowledge about United Nations and its various organs, its structure, organization, aims and ideals are as envisaged in UN Charter. On successful completion of the Correspondence Course, Diploma is awarded to successful students.
