Morbi: A suspension bridge on the Machchhu river with around 500 people on it collapsed here today evening. Gujarat Labour and Employment Minister Brijesh Merja was quoted in media that so far 35 deaths were confirmed.
The nearly century-old suspension bridge bridge was recently repaired and was reopened for the public just five days ago after renovation.

As soon as the information about the incident was received, the police and administration team reached the spot and started the rescue operation on a war footing. Several people have thus far been rescued and sent to the hospital while the search operation continues at the time of going to the press.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Gujarat, announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each of those who lost their lives in the mishap. The Prime Minister’s Office stated that the injured would be given Rs. 50,000.
Earlier Modi spoke to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel and other officials regarding the mishap in Morbi and sought urgent mobilisation of teams for rescue operations.
The Prime Minister’s office tweeted: “PM @narendramodi spoke to Gujarat CM @Bhupendrapbjp and other officials regarding the mishap in Morbi. He has sought urgent mobilisation of teams for rescue ops. He has asked that the situation be closely and continuously monitored, and extend all possible help to those affected.”
