Police used tear gas shells, water cannons and barricades at Delhi’s entry points at Tikri and Singhu borders. Finally around 3 pm, the police opened Tikri border and escorted the farmers to Nirankari Ground in North Delhi.
The farmers are protesting the new farm laws, which they claim are anti-farmers.
Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said the new laws were the need of the time and in coming days would bring revolutionary changes in farmers’ life. He appealed to the farmers to withdraw their agitation invited all farmers’ unions for a meeting on December 3. However the Congress Party, which is also the ruling party in Punjab from where most of the farmers have marched to Delhi, criticised Tomar’s call saying he should have met the farmers now only. ‘BJP’s aim is to destroy the lives of farmers,” the Congress Party tweeted from its official twitter handle today.
