Param Bir Singh leveled extortion charges against the then Maharashta Home Minister Anil Deshmukh
Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray quickly cleared the file that recommended the suspension of former Mumbai top cop, Param Bir Singh. The suspension order was on the basis of an inquiry commission report that was issued by senior IAS officer Debashish Chakrabarty, citing breach of service rules and serious impropriety on the part of Singh in discharging his duties as the city’s police commissioner.
The file recommending suspension was already cleared by Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil, late the previous week and was waiting for the Chief Minister’s nod. Being already inked by Uddhav Thackeray, the order is expected to be served on Singh by late Thursday evening.
Uddhav who returned to office after a prolonged three-week stint in hospital cleared the file today (Thursday) morning. Currently, Singh is also facing serious allegations in the wake of multiple FIRs filed against him in Mumbai as well as its satellite town. The inquiry against Singh was instituted by the state government in early June. The state government appointed Additional Chief Secretary (Planning), Debashish Chakrabarty to head an inquiry for verifying charges of violation of All India Civil Services Rules.
The drama that unfolded after the seizure of a SUV vehicle loaded with gelatin explosives leading to the custodial interrogation and subsequent death of Thane-based businessman Mansukh Hirani took a serious turn, when Param Bir Singh leveled extortion charges against the then Home Minister Anil Deshmukh in collusion with officers of the city police. The allegation summed up that the city police was given a target to extort INR 100 crores from the bars and restaurants on a monthly basis.
In wake of a severe ruffling of feathers at Mantralaya (Maharashtra Government Secretariat) following Deshmukh’s resignation, counter allegations were filed against Param Bir Singh after he was transferred on promotion from the Mumbai top cop’s office. This constituted multiple FIRs alleging his involvement in extortion rackets.
