Jabalpur: Eight people including four patients, three hospital staff and an attendant got killed when a fire broke out at New Life Multi-speciality Hospital at Damoh Naka here today afternoon around 2.15 pm. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Reports suggest that the fire broke out through the generator kept at the hospital. However, the possibilities of a short circuit are also not ruled out. District administration will constitute an enquiry committee for investigation.
More than a dozen people sustained fire injuries, police said. Conditions of two persons were critical, it added.
“It was a massive fire, and our teams rescued all the people trapped inside the hospital,” Chief Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Gaur said.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 5 lakhs each for the families of those killed in the fire.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi too expressed “deep grief” over the loss of lives due to the fire. The Prime Minister’s Office tweeted: “Anguished by the loss of lives due to a fire at a hospital in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. Condolences to the bereaved families. I hope the injured recover at the earliest. The local administration is providing all assistance to those affected: PM”.
