New Delhi: Dr Manmohan Singh’s journey into the political sphere was significantly influenced by his association with Lalit Narayan Mishra, a stalwart of Indian politics. Mishra recognised Singh’s potential and brought him into the political fold, paving the way for his future roles in government.
He had worked closely under Lalit Narayan Mishra. Although he could not attend the latter’s birth centenary celebrations in February 2017 due to his prior commitments. However, his prompt response and sincere acknowledgement of his long association with Mishra were a testament to his respect for those who shaped his journey. In a letter addressed to the event organiser, Mithilalok, Dr Singh recalled that they worked “very closely” in the Ministry of Foreign Trade where Lalit Narayan Mishra was the minister and Dr Singh was the economic advisor. “Shri Mishra was truly a very dynamic personality deeply committed to the ideals of the Congress Party,” he stated.
Dr Singh’s academic excellence and expertise in economics earned him the position of India’s finance minister in 1991. There, he played a pivotal role in liberalising the Indian economy. His reforms during this period—which included reducing trade barriers, ending the licence raj, privatising state-owned enterprises, and introducing market-friendly policies—laid the foundation for India’s economic growth in the decades that followed.
In 2004, Dr Singh assumed the role of Prime Minister after the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance formed the government. His ascent to the highest office in the land was not marked by a thirst for power or a desire for media attention but rather by a deep commitment to public service and the betterment of India’s citizens.
One of Dr Singh’s most significant achievements as Prime Minister was his handling of India’s economy during times of global crises. Under his leadership, India weathered the 2008 global financial crisis with relative ease, thanks to his sound economic policies and prudent management. While the global economy faltered, India continued its economic expansion, and Dr Singh was widely praised for his handling of the financial sector during this period. Under his stewardship, India witnessed the highest growth rate in its history, averaging 7.7% to become a nearly two trillion-dollar economy.
However, Dr. Singh’s tenure was not without challenges. Dr Singh’s tenure as the 14th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014 was a period marked by economic growth, social reforms, and global recognition, as much as the “scams” in the later part of his prime ministership. His administration faced significant political hurdles, including allegations of corruption and mismanagement in some government departments. Despite these challenges, Dr Singh remained steadfast, and his refusal to engage in public confrontations or grandstanding was a mark of his character. “I honestly believe history will be kinder to me than the contemporary media or for that matter, the Opposition parties in Parliament,” he said in his last press conference as prime minister when he was questioned regarding his failure to control his ministers and his reluctance to take action in various circumstances. His ability to maintain dignity and focus on governance in the face of adversity was an inspiring example of leadership.
Dr Singh’s leadership style was defined by a calm demeanour and a preference for working behind the scenes. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he spoke less and did more. His governance was characterised by rational decision-making, patience, and a focus on the long-term goals of the nation. His ability to balance the diverse needs of a billion-strong nation while maintaining India’s global standing was a feat that many admired.
Beyond his economic and political achievements, what truly set Dr Singh apart was his humility. He was a leader who never sought the spotlight and often downplayed his role in the successes of his administration. His style of governance was marked by a strong belief in teamwork, and he was quick to credit others for any accomplishments. His quiet dignity and refusal to indulge in the theatrics of politics made him a respected figure, not only in India but also on the global stage.
As the nation mourns his passing away, it is clear that India has lost a leader who epitomised the values of integrity, wisdom, and service to the nation. His legacy will continue to resonate in the policies he implemented, the reforms he championed, and the values he upheld throughout his life. Manmohan Singh was not just a prime minister; he was a statesman whose influence transcended the borders of politics and economics.
India has witnessed several remarkable leaders who have shaped its destiny over the years, but few have made as lasting and transformative an impact as Dr Manmohan Singh. Known for his quiet yet decisive leadership, his legacy will continue to inspire generations, not through grand speeches but through his actions and the remarkable contributions he made to the nation’s progress. His calm demeanour, intellectual rigour, and commitment to India’s progress have left an indelible mark on the nation. We may never see another leader quite like him, but his example will continue to guide us as we move forward. Today, he would be accorded a State funeral with full military honours at the Nigambodh Ghat, a public cremation ground in north Delhi, on Saturday (December 28, 2024).
