New Delhi: Recent attempt to smuggle in cosmetic goods valued above INR 1.2 crores was foiled by a swift operation the Delhi Customs conducted on the basis of intelligence inputs from the Air Cargo Export Commissionerate.
The intercepted consignments comprised 2800 kg of cosmetic products of Pakistani origin being routed from the Abu Dhabi airport.
In the process, the Delhi Customs also busted a unique modus operandi when acting on specific intelligence, officers of Air Cargo Export Commissionerate, intercepted an import consignment at New Courier Terminal. A case of outright smuggling of Pakistan origin cosmetic products weighing 2800 kg was detected. The goods were being routed through Abu Dhabi under the guise of household articles to evade detection.
A lot of 87 consignments had arrived by flight no. EY 218 from Abu Dhabi. Upon examination 84 consignments were found to contain cosmetics of Pakistani origin while 03 consignments were of perfume concentrate from Bahrain.
The extent of duty attempting to be evaded crossed the INR 1 crore mark as any import from Pakistan attracts 200% customs duty. The smugglers who are yet to be traced and nabbed attempted to use the courier mode by mis-declaring the origin and description of goods and value. This would have resulted in evasion of both customs duty as well as IGST.
The 87 consignments it was found were marked to ghost recipients (recipients that do not exist) by the person planning to evade taxation. Investigations are still underway to nab the reported evader.
