Koh Samui (Thailand): Legendary Australian crickter Shane Warne, who was holidaying here, died of a suspected heart attack today. His manager Michael Cohen stated, “Shane was found unresponsive in his villa and despite the best efforts of medical staff, he could not be revived… The family requests privacy at this time and will provide further details in due course.”
The 52 year old Warne was considered among all time greats in cricket whose whose leg spins mesmerised all – batsmen as well as the spectators. He was named Wisden’s five crickets of the century.
The Wisden Cricketers of the Century
In a career spanning 15 years, he had taken 708 Test wickets for Australia between 1992 and 2007. With 293 wickets in 194 One Day International (ODI) matches, he had taken well over 1000 wickets in international cricket. He was also an ODI World Cup winner in 1999. In Tests, he had taken 5 or more wickets in an innings on 35 occasions, and 10 or more wickets in a match 10 times. He made his test debut against India and his first Test wicket was that of Ravi Shastri who was caught by Dean Jones off his bowling for 206.
Warne was also a useful lower-order batsman and had scored 3,154 Test runs with 12 half centuries. In ODIs he had scored 1,018 runs.
The news of Warne’s death followed the death of another Australian cricket legend, former wicketkeeper Rodney Marsh (74), who too died because of a heart attack earlier this week.
