New Delhi: The Election Commission today decided to hold bye-election to the Council of States from Telangana and Bihar to fill up the vacancies created due to the resignation of Dr Banda Prakash in Telangana, and due to the death of Dr Mahendra Prasad in Bihar, on May 30, 2022.
The notifications to this effect would be issued on May 12, 2022, and the last day for making nominations is May 19, 2022. The last date for withdrawal of candidatures is May 23, 2022.
The term of Dr Prakash in the Telangana Legislative Council was up to April 2, 2024, but he resigned on December 4, 2021. The vacancy in Bihar Legislative Council was created on December 27, 2021, due to the death of Dr Prasad, whose tenure was to end on April 2, 2024.
The counting of votes would be on May 30 for both the seats and the elections would be completed before June 1, 2022, the Election Commission said. The Commission has directed the Chief Secretaries of both the states to depute a senior officer from the State to ensure that the extant instructions regarding COVID-19 containment measures are complied with while making arrangements for conducting the said bye-election.
